Copenhagen, Day 1

Our ferry arrived in Copenhagen at 9:30 this morning; our trip from Oslo was 16.5 hours. The weather was warm but cloudy. In fact, the city seemed quite hazy.

We found our hotel and stowed our bags. Our hotel is right by the train station, so we went there first to get a bite to eat and to secure seat reservations for our upcoming train trips in Sweden.

Over breakfast, we made plans for the day. We decided to take a canal boat tour and then do some touring on foot.

We made our way to the launch point and boarded a flat canal boat. This is where we started; the Christiansborg palace, a former royal residence, is the current home of Parliament.

Sarah is in front of the Stock Exchange.

This is the new opera house, completed just a few years ago.

After the boat tour, we walked to the main pedestrian shopping street, a block away. This view looks something like Times Square.

We got a late lunch down a side street. There weren't any English menus available, so I ordered what Margo guessed to be a ham sandwich. But it was fantastic! The bread was dribbled in balsamic vinegar on one side, with mustard on the other. There was Parma ham with a nice Havarti-like cheese, capers, roasted peppers, and roasted tomatoes. I washed it down with a Carlsberg brown ale. (I think Carlsberg is brewed here.) Margo had a Croque Madame: a grilled cheese with a fried egg on top. Sarah ate what she would from our plates.

Here's the view on the way back. I've seen lots of bikes here, almost as many as in Amsterdam. There's also a citywide bike rental system.

We encountered one of those frozen-until-you-give-coins street performers. Sarah was nervous leaving a coin; here she is running back.

We crossed a plaza ...

... and were soon at City Hall Square, on H.C. Andersens Boulevard, where a statue of the author sits.

We took some downtime in our room for a few hours. For dinner, we set back towards City Hall Square to eat at the Bryggeriet brewery restaurant. The sun was with us again.

We ordered some light dinners and, again, the food was impressively good. Margo had a brown ale, and I had a chestnut dark ale and a summer ale. They were a bit stronger and sweeter like Belgian beers, but not all the way. It was a happy meal.

Tonight we are relaxing in our room. Tomorrow we will visit the Tivoli amusement park, which is very close to our hotel.
