Nordic Trip -- Day 1
We are on the first day of our trip and have just arrived in Newcastle, about 7 hours after leaving our house this morning. We had three legs to our train journey and all went smoothly except for a short delay when there were some problems on the track. Sarah has just recently started to enjoy reading independently and it was such a pleasure to see her absorbed in a Dr Who comic book during a good portion of the travel today -(as opposed to whinging and begging for sweets from the trolley and kicking the seat and annoying us and others!) At home she has been sneaking the light on in her bedroom after I put her to bed at night and reading from a book of fairy tales. I let her get away with it (up to a point) because I remember how much I loved to get involved in a good story after lights out when I was a girl.
Although any long trip eventually includes some inter familial - or more likely inter Mike and Margo - sniping and snapping at some point, and I'm sure this will be no exception, we have gotten this traveling bit down to a pretty fine science. We each carry one bag and a small knapsack (Mike has a larger briefcase size bag with the laptop) I usually am the tour coordinator and make arrangements for hotels and travel connections. Mike and I both carry copies of the itinerary. Everyone carries their own luggage except when Sarah needs help on stairs and when getting on and off trains. She is really very good in this respect and will someday probably appreciate the travel skills she has acquired. She can now also be trusted to hold her own passport for short periods -like when we are in line and she needs it to hand to present to immigration/customs officials.
Our hotel is adjacent to the train station in Newcastle and is quite nice.

Mike has gone out for some exploring and I am typing this whilst Sarah enjoys some quality downtime with her Batman toy. Later we will all have dinner together and perhaps walk into town to see some of the sights. We unfortunately do not have much time as the castle here was the stand-in for Hogwarts in the Harry Potter movies and that would be fun to see. If it's close in town, we'll perhaps get a good view of it tonight. Tomorrow we board our ship before noon and sail overnight to Bergen, Norway - arriving tomorrow afternoon. Although you can rent deck chairs to sleep on for about 10 ponds/night plus fare, we have reserved a cabin for three - View of our cabin-type at

and will be enjoying the smorgasbord buffet dinner at the restaurant. I've just been looking on the website and it looks like there is a swimming pool and a sauna and a Kid's Club, so our time on board should be really enjoyable! We will likely not be able to access internet on board but will be in touch again after arrival in Bergen.
Love, Margo
