Across the Country

We crossed the country in four and a half hours. I thought the flight was pretty turbulent and maybe I've seen Fight Club too many times because I was getting a little freaked out, but Margo did fine and Sarah just slept.

When we approached JFK I was really hoping to see Manhattan but the air was too hazy and overcast. But while walking the terminals we did get to see it far in the distance. The Empire State Building stood out; Sarah thought it looked like a castle.

Getting our rental car was interesting. We walked past the nice, shiny offices of Budget and Hertz and such and boarded a shuttle to Enterprise to ... a part of Queens, I guess, but as we drove on some pretty narrow, unmaintained streets I was thinking, hmmm, maybe we should have spent a few extra dollars. They also gave us an SUV (a little one, a Ford Escape) for our compact reservation ... We guess with gas prices being so high, compacts are hard to fulfill.

At any rate, we've just brought our bags in to Mary and Arthur's house on Long Island, used the restrooms and scarfed a few snacks, and now we are looking forward to sweet, sweet sleep.
