Out with the Old, In with the New
(Written Sunday morning, July 16)
Saturday was a really happy day for us. After breakfast, we went to our (old) house to meet the Fisher family, the new owners. It gave us a chance to explain all the quirks of a 100+ year old house, and gave them a chance to get questions answered. It was also a great visit. At first, Sarah was hiding behind our legs and clinging to our pants, but soon she and the Fisher kids were chasing each other around the house.
Saturday was also the Montavilla Neighborhood Block Party, a day of street games, music, and a parade. We went to Tom and Lena's house to get Sarah ready for the parade - she dressed as a pirate to join Tom, Lena, Nika, Terry, Henry, Albert and Dave playing music and throwing candy.
Afterward, we caught up with the Fishers and other friends to watch the parade. In the foreground are Richard Fisher (left) and Megan (right).
In the next picture are the pirates ... Renee, Henry, Albert, Lena, Nika, and Sarah.
After an afternoon of naps and visiting, we reconvened at Tom and Lena's house for a neighborhood party. It was a going-away for us, and a welcoming for the Fishers. We were very happy to be able to combine the two as sort of a transition.
Tom read my mind with his wine list: a chilled Pino Grigio, a big bottle of Barefoot Merlot and some tawny port. They'd also prepared "the best food available in England": curry; and also lots of other side dishes and treats. There was conversation everywhere, but mostly around a circle of chairs in the yard, and the kids (nearly a dozen!) kept busy with toys, playing in the playground, and playing soccer and bocce with the adults.
After dark, as some people started going home, the guitars came out and Dave, Tom and Aaron let loose. (I'm sure it was coincidence that people started leaving then. Just sure of it.) So did a big bottle of Belgian ale. It was probably the latest of our parties in recent memory; we were among the last to leave around 11.
It was a very happy day for us. I feel very fortunate to have had such great friends in our neighborhood, and it was such a pleasure to be able to introduce new friends.
