No Train For Mike
Today I had to turn down a work opportunity in nearby Bury St. Edmunds. I'd known the town was half an hour away by train, but today, researching the train and bus connections, I realized it's just not plausible given the timings: it might take me half an hour to reach the Ipswich train station from our house by bus, so there's already an hour of commuting time, plus whatever transit connections I'd need in Bury St. Edmunds, which, being a smaller town of 30,000, may not even have local bus service (I didn't find it online).
The main problem is getting home in time to pick up Sarah from her after-school club by 6pm. Margo can't always do it with her commute from Colchester. I could try to get there ridiculously early, but my Ipswich bus line doesn't even start until 6.38 am.
With me working, we'd have plenty of extra money and could hire someone to watch Sarah extra hours, but then we might only see her for an hour or two each day, which we don't want to get into.
So I'm resigned to holding out for work in Ipswich, which is simpler all around. Also, it would be nice for at least one parent to be in the same city she's in during the day in case of an emergency.
